An aayah [آيَة, pl. aayaat آيَات], is the basic unit of Al-Qur’an and the Aayaat are collected into Surahs. The size of an aayah can vary from a few letters to many sentences, its basic meanings includes ‘sign’, ‘miracle’, ‘proof’. There are 114 Surahs (سُوْرَة Surah; pl. سُوَر Suwar) in the Qur’an, the smallest Surah has only 3 aayaat, and the longest (Al-Baqarah) has 286. An aayah is normally made up of one or more sentences. In Arabic two or more words can come together to form phrases or sentences. Arabic has only three types of words, and two types of sentences.
